Summer Reading
Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.
Summer vacation is a time for relaxation and rejuvenation for our students. We, in the English department, feel that reading is an integral part of these pursuits. Last year, we changed the summer reading program and found it to be a great success, and we will continue with this present format. We have, however, made minor modifications to the required book list based on student and faculty input. As with last year, each student will be required to choose one title from a list of required reading that the English department has developed, and one book of their own choosing. Students will complete a separate worksheet for each book. They will choose a quote from each book for each of the following areas: character, conflict and author’s craft (style). They must also write a brief personal connection and a brief critique. During the first week of school, each student will present one of their summer reading assignments to the class. The list reflects a wide range of interests, genres, and levels of difficulty and the books may be obtained in the following ways.
The required reading lists, the worksheets and the rubric we will use for evaluation are available at the high school, the library, on the town library’s web site http://www.easthamptonct.org/library/ , at the High school’s web site, www.ehhs.org and by clicking on the links below:
We trust you will enjoy having reading as a part of your summer recreation. Respectfully,
